The story behind Ironsand begins with the co-founders, Nick Dalton and Richard Houlahan – family men who share a love for the great outdoors. They bring over 40 years of combined expertise in the field of architecture.
Now, why the name Ironsand? The beaches around Manawatū and Taranaki are known for their unique iron-rich sand, giving those shores their distinctive hue and adding a touch of rugged beauty.
For Richard, iron is a nod to his love for golf, in which the clubs are made of, and with sand representing Nicks love of surfing and fishing. Just like how iron forms the building material of steel, these two know a thing or two about building strong connections and sturdy relationships. So, when they decided to start a business, Ironsand was the obvious choice – a name that’s as solid as their commitment to family and friends, and as enduring as the landscapes they love.
Their passion for design excellence and their commitment to client satisfaction have been instrumental in shaping the philosophy and success of Ironsand.

DIRECTOR: Nick Dalton:
Nick is a Licensed Architectural Designer with over 8 years’ experience, prior to that he was on the tools as a builder for 13 years gaining his carpentry qualification and running his own building firm. His passion is helping clients to capture their house design ideas, applying his practical knowledge of what works and what doesn’t work, giving homeowners and builders alike a head start in the design process. His relaxed trade focused approach makes the design process as easy as possible for all parties involved.
DIRECTOR: Richard Houlahan:
Richard is a seasoned architectural designer with 22 years of architectural experience and he is a Licensed Building Practitioner at Design 2 level. From cozy homes to bustling commercial spaces, he’s done it all across three Manawatū architectural firms. But what really drives Richard? It’s the joy of helping clients see their visions come alive, no matter how big or small. With him, every project is an opportunity for innovation and collaboration, turning visions into vibrant spaces that inspire.
Kathy Brunton:
Kathy’s passion for residential design began early – sketching house plans as a child – and has since evolved into over five years of professional experience in the field. Several years ago, she designed her own home, and more recently, she and her family have taken on the challenge of renovating a new space together. These personal and professional experiences give her a deep understanding of the processes involved in building and renovating.
Kathy brings a thoughtful, collaborative approach to every project, with a genuine desire to create spaces that feel right, function beautifully, and connect with their surroundings. Whether a client is building from the ground up or re-imagining an existing home, she is dedicated to helping bring their vision to life.
